PROJECT STORY

​

The Sustainable Farming in the Climate Crisis project revolutionizes farming in Zimbabwe by partnering with three primary schools to introduce climate-smart agriculture to enhance crop yields and nutritional diversity. Through training and student engagement, the project fosters self-reliance, mitigating food insecurity and promoting sustainable farming by nurturing the next generation of farmers for a resilient agricultural landscape.

 

The project is centered on three schools in one area to receive training in climate smart agriculture and the establishment of eight Pfumvudza plots and a nutritional garden (carrots, tomatoes, onions, cabbages and peas) on the school grounds. The project goal is to improve the farming practices of schools and implement innovative ways to encourage surrounding communities to do the same. Additional women’s community farming Pfumvudza plots

and a nutritional garden will also be created. A single 'Pfumvudza' pack has the potential to feed a family of six with maize or sugar beans for a year.

PURPOSE EARTH GRANT SUPPORT

​Through the support of a $10,000 Purpose Earth grant, the project will be able to secure the funds for staff training, garden materials such as seeds and compost and drip irrigation equipment for the plots. 

“One in three children in Zimbabwe suffers from chronic malnutrition and less than one in ten receives the globally defined minimum diet for their age. …This project will significantly change the ability of the school and communities to feed themselves, generate income and withstand the effects of climate change.”
